THE ability of the Mount Gambier and Millicent community centres to turn small ripples into waves of change in the Limestone Coast is being celebrated this month as part of South Australia’s Community Centre Week.

Country agency ac.care proudly operates community centres in central locations at Mount Gambier and Millicent, which are the base for homelessness, financial counselling and emergency relief services.

The growth of new activities and opportunities for Limestone Coast residents at both centres reflect the Community Centre Week theme of “Ripples of Change”, which highlights how every action, no matter how small, has the power to start a ripple that spreads kindness, sparks ideas and strengthens communities.

Among the familiar faces for people visiting Mount Gambier Community Centre is ac.care homelessness and community services senior manager Trish Spark, who said the ripples of change had created tangible differences in the lives of people who visit the centres and engage with the opportunities.

“People from all walks of life visit the centre each day and interact with the services and opportunities differently based on their circumstances,” Ms Spark said.

“A popular aspect has been the weekly interactive, fun activities that connect people through conversation, art, music, gardening, games and more.

“We know the negative effects of loneliness and social isolation on people’s health can be significant so these groups bring together a broad range of people to connect, have fun and learn new skills.”

Ms Spark said both centres provided fresh food and pantry items for people on a daily basis with support from local businesses through donations of goods.

The community is invited to explore the Millicent and Mount Gambier community centres as part of the Community Centres Week celebrations with both sites hosting open days for the community to meet the team, take a tour and learn more about what support is available.

Millicent Community Centre will host a barbecue lunch from 12pm on Wednesday, May 14 at its 57-59 George Street site, which also functions as a Service SA Rural Agent/Service Agent, Services Australia Agency and a location for other organisations to provide outreach services for the community.

Mount Gambier Community Centre, located at 22-24 Ferrers Street, will hold an open day on Thursday, May 15 from 11am-2pm with all welcome.
