Become a Child and Youth Worker

in Mount Gambier

Strong communities are built through connection, belonging and people who show up for one another.

As a Child and Youth Worker with ac.care, you’ll help create a home environment where young people can build confidence, develop life skills, strengthen relationships and feel connected to their community.

The work is built on everyday moments – sharing a meal, encouraging a new skill, celebrating progress or being a consistent and trusted presence.

You don’t need to have all the answers. We’re looking for people who bring empathy, reliability and a willingness to learn while making a meaningful contribution close to home.

Bring who you are. Build a career that matters.

What is residential care?

Residential care provides a home environment for young people who require care and support when they are unable to live with family, kin or foster carers.

Our homes are small, community-based environments where young people can continue attending school, participating in activities, maintaining relationships and working towards their goals.

Every young person’s journey is different

Young people come into care for many reasons, and no two experiences are the same.

Many have experienced significant change, uncertainty or challenges in their lives. During these times, safe relationships, consistent support and a sense of belonging can make an important difference.

Our role is not to define young people by their experiences, but to support them to build on their strengths, develop confidence and work towards the future they want for themselves.

Life in our residential care homes

A residential care home is exactly that – a home.
Daily life includes many of the same things that happen in any household:

  • Sharing meals
  • Going to school
  • Participating in sport and activities
  • Learning everyday life skills
  • Spending time with friends and family
  • Celebrating milestones and achievements

These everyday experiences help create connection, routine and opportunities for growth.

Supporting young people to thrive

Our Child and Youth Workers provide practical support, guidance and encouragement every day.

By building positive relationships and creating consistent routines, they help young people develop confidence, strengthen life skills and stay connected to their communities.

Our residential care homes are staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, ensuring young people have ongoing support when they need it.

A pathway to the future

Residential care is often one part of a young person’s broader journey.

Where possible, we work towards outcomes that strengthen relationships and support transitions to longer-term living arrangements, including reunification with family, kinship care, foster care, independent living or other suitable options.

The goal is always to support young people towards stability, connection and positive opportunities for the future.

Child and youth workers make it possible

The most direct way community members can contribute to residential care is by becoming a Child and Youth Worker.

Our youth workers come from many different backgrounds and stages of life. Some are beginning a new career, while others bring experience gained through work, parenting, volunteering or involvement in their community.

Could this career be right for you?

We’re looking for people who are:

  • Caring and respectful
  • Reliable and accountable
  • Calm and resilient
  • Good at building relationships
  • Open to learning and growth

You don’t need to have all the answers. We’re looking for people with the right values and a genuine interest in supporting young people.

What support is available?

We provide:

  • Paid induction and buddy shifts
  • Ongoing supervision and coaching
  • Professional development opportunities
  • Free Certificate IV training
  • Career progression opportunities
  • Flexible shift-based work arrangements
  • Salary packaging and employment benefits

Your experience could make a difference here.
