About

ac.care is a non-government organisation (NGO) with charitable status, created by country people for country people. The organisation started in 1986 because there was no teenage foster care service in Mount Gambier, South Australia.

We have a focus on early intervention and prevention services and our mission is for all country people to have a safe home, enough money to live on and strong, positive relationships. Our core activities include the recruitment and support of foster carers, supports for people experiencing homelessness, Aboriginal services, family relationships, counselling, financial inclusion and community adult education.

Today we provide community services to the South Australian country communities of the Limestone Coast, Riverland, Murraylands, Adelaide Hills and Fleurieu Peninsula.

We work in our communities and with each other to these values

Our Story

ac.care began in Mount Gambier in 1986, when a small group of local people recognised that teenagers who could not live at home needed safe, caring support close to their community. They started fundraising to make this possible, and their commitment led to State Government funding to recruit and support local foster carers.

The first service focused on finding and supporting foster carers for young people aged 12 to 18. The Anglican Parish Council of Christ Church Mount Gambier stepped forward to auspice the service, helping turn a community idea into a lasting support network.

Over time, ac.care grew as other local groups joined together, including the South East Regional Accommodation Forum, South East Anglican Support Services, South Easterners Against Child Sexual Abuse, Millicent Community Access Centre and Mount Gambier Community House. Each merger strengthened our ability to respond to the needs of country people.

From these beginnings, ac.care has continued to grow alongside the communities we serve. Today, we employ more than 230 staff and deliver over 70 programs across country South Australia, including homelessness services, youth and family support, and Aboriginal services.

We remain a locally based organisation committed to walking alongside people in country communities, supporting them to build safe, strong and connected lives.
