TOYS, food, and vouchers were provided to country South Australians in need last month to help spread Christmas joy.

Community donations brought relief and support to families across the Riverland, Murraylands, and Limestone Coast, underscoring the vital role of community contributions during the holiday season.

In the Riverland, ac.care staff contributed to the Riverland Christmas Appeal as part of a community effort to deliver about 530 hampers to families in need.

ac.care’s Berri Community Centre team also helped share the magic of Christmas by creating Santa’s Cave – a fun, free space for children and families to explore and meet Santa.

“Our community’s diversity was reflected in the visitors to Santa’s Cave this year, showing that the spirit of Christmas connects us all,” ac.care Berri Community Centre program coordinator Sue Dayman said.

“Having low or no-cost events for families and local people is important so we can all enjoy fun, social activities together.”

In the Murraylands, over 250 children received toys as part of 180 hampers for families.

Community donations were pivotal to the 2025 Murraylands Christmas Cheer Appeal’s positive impact, delivered by ac.care, the Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul.

GIVING AT CHRISTMAS: Hundreds of toys and dozens of Christmas hampers were distributed across the Murraylands to families in need as part of the 2025 appeal.

In the Limestone Coast, community support boosted the Mount Gambier Christmas Cheer initiative, aiding over 670 people, including 260 children.

A significant $15,000 donation from the Mount Gambier Mayor’s Christmas Appeal underpinned the annual initiative, which also received support from local businesses, schools, churches, charity partner Good360, other organisations, and the Limestone Coast community.

The Buy A Bauble initiative also raised over $7000 to support local people with toys, food, and vouchers.

Mount Gambier resident Denise Rankine has received support through the Christmas Cheer initiative several times and is grateful for its impact.

“It just helps if you’re struggling at Christmas time and you’ve got bills coming in,” Denise said.

“All the little bits and pieces they provide help,” she said.

POSITIVE IMPACT: Mount Gambier resident Denise Rankine praised Christmas Cheer for its positive impact supporting people during the festive period. Denise is pictured on the 2025 Christmas Cheer collection day at Mount Gambier Community Centre alongside ac.care homelessness and community services senior manager Trish Spark.

Denise said she visited the Mount Gambier Community Centre throughout the year for support and to mix with the community.

“I will come in for a coffee, cup of tea, or toasties, and for assistance every now and then, when I need it.”

ac.care homelessness and community services manager Trish Spark applauded local generosity, noting it makes a real difference for people in need.

“Every contribution has helped share the joy of Christmas with someone in need,” Trish said.

“This strong community support ensures country people – no matter their circumstances – can also experience the joy and celebration of Christmas.”
