A NEW mural capturing the spirit of the Riverland has been officially celebrated at the ac.care Berri Community Centre, marking the culmination of a collaborative community project.
Created by Riverland artist Jarrod Loxton, the large‑scale artwork was developed through a series of hands‑on workshops involving a diverse range of local community members at the Kealley Street centre.
Supported by the Australian Government’s Regional Arts Fund, the project brought people together to explore ideas, learn new skills and contribute to a shared creative vision that reflects the Riverland’s identity.
Mr Loxton said the workshops were a highlight of the project and offered a rare opportunity to share his process with the community.
“Working with three different groups was a really positive experience,” he said.
“People came in a little unsure at first, but once they started experimenting and talking about what mattered to them, the ideas really flowed.
“Seeing participants gain confidence and then recognise elements of their own input in the final mural has been incredibly rewarding.”

POSITIVE PARTNERSHIP: Central Irrigation Trust chief executive Greg McCarron, ac.care Berri Community Centre coordinator Sue Dayman and mural artist Jarrod Loxton in front of the newly completed mural at the ac.care Berri Community Centre.

The mural incorporates themes identified during the workshops, including local landscapes, the river, the pelican and the people who make up the community.
A subtle “open door” motif also features in the design, symbolising the welcoming nature of the Berri Community Centre and its role as a place where people from all walks of life can connect.
Mr Loxton completed the mural over three days, working around the challenges of the site and incorporating ideas gathered from participants.
ac.care Berri Community Centre coordinator Sue Dayman said the project had strengthened community connection and created a lasting piece of public art for the region.
“This mural represents the voices, ideas and stories of the people who come through our doors every day,” Ms Dayman said.
“Jarrod brought such generosity and care to the process, and the workshops gave people a chance to learn, share and be part of something meaningful.
“We’re incredibly proud of the result and grateful to everyone who contributed.”
Ms Dayman also thanked Central Irrigation Trust for supporting the project, which has transformed the industrial exterior of the large water tank into a striking snapshot of Riverland life.
The celebration also served as a meaningful lead‑in to Community Centre Week SA (May 11-17), which highlights the vital role community centres play in fostering belonging, connection and opportunities for South Australians.
The mural is now proudly on display at the ac.care Berri Community Centre, 5 Kealley Street, Berri.
