We’re proud to share Why I Care – a six‑part video series featuring foster carers from across country South Australia who have opened their homes and hearts to children in need.
Across the series, carers speak honestly about their own “why” – the reasons they chose foster care and the moments that continue to inspire them. Their stories highlight the importance of stability, connection, community and creating safe, nurturing environments for children who need support.
Brooke, who appears in the series with her partner Mark, shared that their motivation comes from a simple belief.
“We chose to become foster carers because we believe every child deserves to be loved, to have a safe environment, a place to call home. As carers, we want to nurture their wellbeing to support their confidence, their growth, and their sense of self.”
Jeremy, another carer featured in the series, reflected on the long‑term impact foster care can have.
“I believe that giving a child a chance to experience a wonderful, stable home life is an important key element to their future.”
Through these stories, we hope to spark conversations across country South Australia and encourage people to consider how they might support children in care – whether through long‑term care, short‑term care, emergency care or respite.
As our Out of Home Care executive manager Shalini McCarthy explains:
“Every story in this series shows that ordinary people can create extraordinary change. We hope these voices inspire others to explore their own ‘why’ and consider becoming part of our foster care community.”
